Picture a beautiful black queen washing her crown and all its glory in the shower. Slowly, a pale hand reaches for the shower curtain and rips it back. Becky, a agent of chaos, strikes! That is a scene straight out of the Lane Fobbs comic books series “Becky.”
Inspired by the novel Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Fobbs puts his own twist on the classic by making his main character a black women named Shay who narrates the transformation of her boyfriend Eric -the Dr.Jekyll of the series- who turns into a white woman named Becky.
In a Ticker Report exclusive, Fobbs was ask why he, as a black man, would make his main character a black woman? He stated he wanted to “make a intelligent female character” that he never sees on the big or small screen. Referencing todays black female lead shows, such as Insecure, Fobbs feels he doesn’t see black women use their intellect to solve problems. Becky’s main character, Shay, has to use her mind to try and figure out how to save her boyfriend, Eric.
Although “Becky” is inspired by sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, its more than entertaining. When pulling back the layers you will find that this comic touches on several social issues that effect the black community. It’s about the “intersectionality and integration” of white people into the black community and how the effects have ravaged it. That’s what Becky represents. Always wrecking chaos with her long nails and sharp high heels. The comic also hints at interracial dating, hence Eric turning into Becky. And while love is love, the author of this series wants to see more black love represented. Fobbs wants his audience to see “Black couples. They love each other. They are couple fighting for love and their life.”
With such a triggering name and topic, Fobbs may receive criticism. Is he worried about offending anyone? “Of course, but that’s what art is. It’s subjective.”
